Horizon to Advance Game Development Platform with $40M Raise From Ubisoft, Take-Two, and More

Key areas the funding will be applied to include its blockchain solutions system and its popular trading card game Skyweaver.

Horizon, the developer behind the popular blockchain-based game Skyweaver, has just raised $40 million USD in a Series A funding round. A few of the most notable backers include game developer giants Ubisoft and Take-Two Interactive.

Other major backers in the round led by BH Digital Assets and Morgan Creek Digital include Polygon, Everyrealm, key members of Shopify’s executive team, and more.

According to Horizon, the funding will primarily go towards the advancement of Sequence, a developer platform designed to “make Web3 easy, fun, and powerful for users and builders.”

Horizon itself is a blockchain solutions company that is focused on the development of virtual worlds — be it through cryptocurrencies, NFTs, social identities, video game items, virtual real estate, or other assets. It has identified these sectors as key areas of interest, and according to its website, is “committed to providing billions of people with easy and secure access to this new dimension of web3, so that everyone can own, use and enjoy digital assets.”

It’s doing so by providing users with experiences through its free-to-play NFT-based card game Skyweaver and by making tools available to developers, like its Sequence platform.

In the brands trading card game Skyweaver, players can trade, sell, and gift cards and most importantly play-to-own their digital assets — thanks to blockchain technology.

In addition to funding Sequence, Horizon shared that funds will also be used to enhance Skyweaver as well. This will be done by refining its ecosystem of content like tradable stickers, Legacy Hero Skins, and Conquest Weekly Treasure offerings. Other areas of focus include the in-game Ambassador and Creator programs, as well as the continued development of its tournament circuit.

While the amount of funding is significant on its own, perhaps more important are the names behind the backing. Ubisoft is known for iconic Web2 games like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and more — with Take-Two behind Rockstar Games and 2K, which are responsible for titles like Grand Theft Auto, NBA 2K, and more.

As massive Web2 veterans enter the space a balance between the Web3-centric style of gaming like play-to-own and the quality of AAA games will slowly become the standard of the space.
