FTX Catastrophe Soon To Be Turned Into Docu-Series
With several different takes of the event being produced by names like Billie Mintz, the Russo Brothers, and Michael Lewis.
The collapse of the crypto exchange FTX is an event that has sent shockwaves through the entire ecosystem, resulting in a massive amount of contagion, and the loss of billions and billions of dollars.
Its story is one filled with twists and turns, violent ups and downs, and possibly even a few silver linings. Like major financial crises before it, the FTX saga makes for the perfect storm of content for filmmakers, producers, and writers.
In that regard, three have already stepped up to the plate to produce content based on current events, including names like Billie Mintz, the Russo Brothers, and Michael Lewis.
Billie Mintz
Working with Extraordinary Entertainment’s Daljit DJ Parmar is award-winning documentary filmmaker Billie Mintz, known best for his 2018 docufilm, The Guardians.
Mintz is setting out to produce a broader docu-series named “THE BAD BOYS OF CRYPTO.” The true crime series aims to highlight the rise and fall of some of the most notorious figures in the crypto industry, with its first installations said to cover the demise of Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and the collapse of FTX.
“With the recent FTX scandal, there’s an ever more need for an investigative series to showcase the details of how major crypto players have gone bust from a combination of greed, corruption, and negligence,” shared Mintz.
Russo Brothers
Approaching the FTX implosion from the drama side of things, Amazon has announced that it is partnering with the Russo Brothers, best known for their Marvel movies.
“This is one of the most brazen frauds ever committed,” shared the Russos in a statement on the upcoming show, first reported by Variety.
Adding that, “it crosses many sectors — celebrity, politics, academia, tech, criminality, sex, drugs and the future of modern finance. At the center of it all sits an extremely mysterious figure with complex and potentially dangerous motivations. We want to understand why.”
The show is slated to go into production in Spring 2023, with “Hunters” creator David Weil said to be writing the pilot episode.
Michael Lewis
Known for the movie adaptation of his book “The Big Short”, which highlighted the insanity of the 2008 housing market crash — author Michael Lewis now has his eyes on FTX and has reportedly been following the exchange for some time.
Matthew Snyder, a Creative Artists Agency agent, was reported by the Ankler to have sent an email on the initiative to potential buyers.
He shared that “for the past six months or so, Michael Lewis has been traveling with and interviewing Sam Bankman-Fried,” adding, “His childhood, early success on Wall Street, embrace of effective altruism and the creation of a crypto empire that catapulted him in record time into the ranks of the richest people in the world seemed more than sufficient for a signature Michael Lewis book.”
Snyder went on to share that “of course, the events of the past week have provided a dramatic surprise ending to the story. It also highlighted the rivalry between Bankman-Fried and Binance head Changpeng Zhao,” adding, “Michael likens them to the Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader of crypto. Michael hasn’t written anything yet, but the story has become too big for us to wait.”
Education and Entertainment
“By showcasing some of the most infamous crypto stories, our goal is to help educate and inform audiences to create more transparency in the cryptocurrency world,” shared Extraordinary Entertainment’s Parmar regarding his upcoming docu-series with Mintz.
While of course, these types of books, films, and series adaptations can serve as a sort of surreal entertainment — they are also true stories and as to the desire of most creators, there is a hope they will help to educate future market participants.
With mainstream media being accused of perhaps not sharing the full story or in some cases writing blatant “puff pieces,” it is more important than ever for content like the above to be shared from multiple angles to provide a better look at the bigger picture.
