Catch the Macy’s Parade in Manhattan or the Metaverse This Year
Featuring collaborative and immersive galleries from VeeFriends, Cool Cats, gmoney, Boss Beauties, and SupDucks — powered by OnCyber.
This year, Macy’s is bringing its famous Thanksgiving Day Parade to the metaverse. While admittedly nothing can replace the physical parade, the immersive digital offering does provide an option for those who can’t make it to Manhattan — be it due to logistics, illness, or other impairments.
In the spirit of giving, Macy’s announced that all funds raised from the token sales will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), the United States’ largest youth mentorship organization.
Back on the Blockchain
Macy’s is no stranger to the blockchain, last year the storied retailer released nearly roughly 9,500 NFTs, representing various floats from the parade.
Like it’s doing with BBBSA this year, it also utilized the token sales to benefit charity, with 10% of secondary sales going to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
Taking things a step further with a metaverse activation this year, fans will have the chance to vote on various collaborative partner galleries, with the prize to the winning NFT community being a physical float in the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Holders of NFTs from 2021 will be given extra voting power in the contest, as well as holders of collectibles from the various collaborative communities. The chance to earn a free NFT is also available this year to the first 100,000 fans who place their votes.

Part of the Community
Macy’s approach to Web3 has primarily come in the form of building with various PFP communities, with its metaverse parade featuring galleries from VeeFriends, Cool Cats, Boss Beauties, and SupDucks.
Its partnership with VeeFriends has been one of the largest collaborative efforts in the Web3 space, and based on public opinion, seems to have been received well.
The massive retailer helped to support the release of the NFT brand’s latest physical collectible line, including mini figures as well as plush and vinyl characters.

Full of Firsts
The 96th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be one for the history books, as it is full of firsts.
While the metaverse still needs time to develop, the parade being shown via the immersive OnCyber space is akin to the first time it was broadcast on television in 1946 and notably not in color until nearly 20 years later.
This year’s parade also marks the first instance of the start time being changed since 1977, with the festivities set to begin as early as 8:45 AM ET.

Big Floats and a Big Deal
Aside from all the festivities, impressive floats, galleries, free and paid NFT collectibles — the event stands for much more than a good time.
Through its fundraising for BBBSA, the organization will be able to continue to mentor the next generation as they become young adults. The organization is particularly focused on strengthening the mental well-being of its mentees and fostering an inclusive environment for all.
“As we countdown to the 96th Macy’s Parade, we are excited to bring this spectacle once again to the Web3 virtual landscape with a fun experience that empowers our fans, collectors, and our highly engaged Discord community,” said Will Coss, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.”
He added that, “our genesis collection of Parade NFT’s last year was so successful that we wanted to give our digital community the opportunity to select a native NFT design to be transformed into a real-world Macy’s Parade balloon, while also creating an opportunity to raise critical funds for our partner Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.”
Thanks to OnCyber the event is accessible simply through a mobile phone or computer and does not require any special VR equipment — making the event something truly anyone anywhere can enjoy, perhaps for the first time.
