Tech giant Meta has acquired smart eyewear company Luxexcel, a Belgian-Dutch optics 3D printing company. More recently they have focused on creating complex glass lenses for us in AR optics. has focused on creating smart lenses that can be printed with integrated technology such as LCD displays and holographic film. This acquisition will likely allow Meta to produce prescription augmented reality (AR) glasses, a product that has long been anticipated by the company’s Reality Labs.

Meta has a history of acquiring smaller companies with leading technology in the AR and virtual reality (VR) field, with its flagship headset, the Quest, coming from the acquisition of Oculus in 2014. However, Meta’s acquisition of VR fitness developers Within has faced antitrust scrutiny, and the purchase of Luxexcel could also be scrutinized.

In September 2021, Meta released the Ray-Ban Stories, a pair of smart glasses that can take photos and videos, make hands-free calls, and be voice-controlled using Meta platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook.

This introduction to the world of smart eyewear marked an essential step in Meta’s efforts to disrupt the technology industry and push toward the development of the metaverse.

Smart eyewear, augmented reality (AR), and other emerging technologies have the potential to play a significant role in the development and evolution of the digital word we now refer to as the ‘metaverse’. These technologies can enable users to access and interact with virtual environments in new and innovative ways, potentially transforming the way we communicate, collaborate, and consume media.

By leveraging Luxexcel’s technology, Meta is likely aiming to produce prescription AR glasses. This product has long been anticipated by the company’s Reality Labs, which have received billions of dollars in investment.

As AR and VR technology use continues to expand and advance, companies like Meta are positioning themselves at the forefront of the industry by acquiring leading technology and talent. While the acquisition of Luxexcel may bring additional scrutiny, it also has the potential to bring new opportunities and capabilities for Meta in the AR and smart eyewear market.
