Animoca Brands Acquires Eden Games To Develop Crypto Racing Games

The company’s second game studio acquisition this year.

Racing game studio Eden Games will soon be acquired by Hong Kong-based gaming and metaverse company Animoca Brands.

Founded in Lyon, France, in 1998, Eden Games has developed several award-winning racing games across mobile, console and PC. It is well-known for the Test Drive franchise and Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. In recent years the brand had focused on building mobile games like Gear.Club and F1 Mobile Racing.

Animoca purchased Eden Games from Engine Gaming and Media Inc. for $16 million USD and will task them with building blockchain-based games.

The purchase marks Animoca Brand’s interest in developing racing games, an industry projected to reach a market size of $3.1 billion USD by 2028. Currently, popular titles like Forza Horizon 5 have over 10 million active users, and there is a growing interest in the development of “play-to-earn” games in the Web3 space.

The brand plans to focus on existing games within Animoca’s REVV Racing ecosystem and develop “a series” of new racing games based on the Ethereum sidechain scaling solution Polygon. All of Animoca’s current racing games are play-to-earn experiences built around the REVV token.

In February, Animoca Brands acquired indie developer Grease Monkey Games. Animoca also owns The Sandbox, a developing Ethereum-based metaverse game.

In other news, Fortnite creator Epic Games continues building in the metaverse with $2B investment.
