A Closer Look at Nike's CryptoKicks NFT Patent Reveals Possible Future Utilities

The patent mentions ‘breeding’ shoes and hints at possible video game integration.

Nike originally submitted its CryptoKicks patent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in 2019. While many of the outlined concepts have been achieved since the filing, there are still some aspects that remain unseen. The patent mentions use cases like 3rd party gaming applications, virtual object generation, and “mash-ups” of multiple digital assets.

Originally it seems that one of the concepts outlined might be physical goods being accompanied by a digital asset. However, with Nike’s acquisition of RTFKT Studios, it seems to be going in the other direction, where a non-fungible token (NFT) might later be redeemable for its physical counterpart.

Another key part of the patent to pay attention to is the “breeding” aspect. Nike states in the patent that CryptoKicks will have features that allow for the “breeding of a digital shoe with another digital shoe to create ‘shoe offspring,’” and that if possible, the offspring might be “custom made as a new, tangible pair of shoes.”

As for the potential gaming aspect, the use cases surrounding it are still purely speculative — however, the patent does mention the application of the CryptoKicks potentially having use on 3rd party platforms. This could mean that the NFTs might be integrated into AAA video games like the NBA 2k series or other sports-related games. The patent leaves a lot open to interpretation and several things to look forward to from CryptoKicks.
