Coinbase Announces the Launch of Its Global Crypto Think Tank ‘Coinbase Institute’

With the objective of progressing decentralization and the future of Web3.

On Wednesday, May 18, Coinbase announced the launch of its global crypto think tank Coinbase Institute. The goal of the think tank is to accelerate research that progresses decentralization, Web3, and the future of finance. The Institute will participate in collaborative discussions and partnerships with thought leaders, academics, policymakers, and the broader crypto community.

According to the announcement, the proposed cutting-edge research produced by the Institute by its soon-to-be-formed in-house team will be used to advance public knowledge and awareness of cryptocurrency and Web3. The information will be shared through the Institute’s “Monthly Insights Report,” a newsletter comparing live data of market movements in the crypto-economy and traditional finance space.

Live now, is the Institutes Primers series, “Crypto and the Climate.” These series are designed to help break down both essential and trending concepts around crypto and Web3. Additional series will be added regularly to help deliver clear explanations of key issues with up-to-date data and analysis.

The Institute’s first partner is the University of Michigan, which will work collaboratively with the think tank to release its first comprehensive annual survey of US households’ adoption of cryptocurrency. The University of Michigan Survey Research Center is known for conducting some of the most widely cited studies — as well as its work with both the US Census Bureau and the Department of Defense.

Sitting at the head of the board will be Coinbase Director of Policy Hermine Wong, who previously served at the SEC. Alongside Wong in a leadership role is the Director of Economic Research, Dr. Cesare Fracassi. Other notable members include founder of the MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab Christian Catalini, faculty member of Havard Business School’s Finance Unit Marco Di Maggio, and Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Vikramaditya S. Khanna.
