OpenSea User Emails Compromised in Data Leak

An employee of the platform’s email vendor, Customer.io, downloaded and shared the data with a third party.

OpenSea alerted late on Wednesday night, June 29, that its user email information had been compromised. The data leak occurred when an employee of the platform’s email vendor, Customer.io, downloaded and shared the email addresses with an unauthorized party.

OpenSea said that if anyone had shared their email with OpenSea in the past “you should assume you were impacted.”

The NFT platform warned that there is an increased likelihood of email phishing scams and issued cybersecurity practice guidelines to its users. It added that these scams may try to use domain names similar to its own like opensae.io, opensea.org, and other variations — with a reminder that OpenSea.io is its only true domain.

In addition, the site advised users to never download anything from an OpenSea email, check the URL of any page linked in an OpenSea email, never share or confirm passwords or secret wallet phrases, and never sign a wallet transaction prompted directly from an email.

OpenSea said there is an ongoing investigation and a report has been filed with law enforcement.

In other news, Lawyers airdropped an NFT to a hacker to serve them with legal documents.
