Reddit announced Thursday, July 7, the launch of an artist lead NFT avatar marketplace. The new platform will allow users to purchase avatars without any cryptocurrency, likely through the use of a debit or credit card.

The new blockchain-based marketplace is an advancement of Reddit’s Avatar Builder which went live nearly two years ago, it was initially created so users could display a unique identity on their Reddit profiles.

Since then the platform has partnered with brands like Netflix, Riot Games, the Australian Football League, and more to offer limited edition accessories, outfits, and hairstyles that users could customize their avatars with.

This new update will now put the power in the hands of artists and collectors through the use of blockchain technology. Reddit artists will have the ability to create digital assets that will be listed for sale at a fixed price and will be paid for each collectible sold.

The NFTs to come are said to number in the “tens of thousands” based on the ability to customize with different digital assets.

From a collector standpoint the avatars have several unique benefits, primarily the ability for users to purchase without the need for cryptocurrency, likely through a crypto on-off-ramp like MoonPay. By allowing for users to buy digital assets using a debit or credit card, Reddit is creating a more accessible user experience and in so increasing adoption of the technology.

Additionally, purchasers will be granted licensing rights to their avatars and in turn will be able to use the art on and off Reddit in a variety of different ways.

One of the primary goals of the new marketplace is to create a place for aspiring artists to grow. The platform has created a creator waitlist that artists can join if interested in having their work featured in upcoming collections.
