The University of Tokyo Will Now Offer Metaverse Education Courses

Todai, The University of Tokyo has revealed its new offering of metaverse courses and education this upcoming academic year.

The institution of higher education is launching a Metaverse study program to focus on training personnel working on “digital transformation” and “advanced technologies.”

According to Tokyo’s local news outlet, The Asahi Shimbun, the program will provide teachings in person as well as inside the metaverse, an online virtual-reality setting. The courses will operate under the university’s faculty of engineering.

The curriculums Todai will teach are intended for helping students understand the fundamentals of metaverse studies. Aimed at students ranging from high school to adults, the project hopes to introduce emerging career paths within the engineering and information science fields.

Those already in the workforce can receive further certifications and offerings to various opportunities such as “artificial intelligence (AI), entrepreneurial education, and next-generation communication technology.”

The program also announced a focus on welcoming female learners into the space, given their lack of representation in engineering programs.  “Using the metaverse would allow for creating an educational system in which anyone, regardless of age, gender, social standing, and area of residence, can learn about engineering and information science,” said the University’s officials.

Todai’s metaverse will also be accessible to students across Asia’s universities as the metaverse becomes a key digital environment.

With the rise of virtual ecosystem support like Shanghai’s plans to reach a $440 billion USD digital economy, Japan is seeking to educate its shortage of skilled personnel in these related areas.

Promoting digital and metaverse concepts to Japan’s scholars will help the country stay competitive with other nations’ innovative technologies.

Previously, Teruo Fujii, Todai’s president, presented the incoming-student orientation and lecture in an online metaverse-like setting.

Earlier this month, the UK’s University of Surrey also announced plans for its academy of innovative technologies which focuses on schooling in the metaverse and blockchain skills.
