Afterpay's NFT Drop Wants to Unlock NYFW's High Barrier to Entry With IRL Experiences

Presenting fashion enthusiasts with “the keys” to exclusive token-gated events and merchandise for this year’s New York Fashion Week.

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is known for bringing together some of the fashion industry’s greatest talent and celebrated names. However, emerging artists and those without those direct connections have continued to face challenges with the event’s high barrier to entry.

Afterpay (NYSE: SQ), a digital payment platform has partnered with five leading creatives — Kim Shui, Altu by Joseph Altuzarra, The Blonds, AnOnlyChild, and Jonathan Simkhai — in launching an NFT collection — “The Keys to NYFW” — helping to open some doors to NYFW, and creating that accessibility through blockchain technology.

Shifting the tone of NYFW back to the people, the NFT Keys are inspired by decentralization and admittance through offering designer collectibles with unmatched access to real NYFW shows, meet-and-greets, private shopping events, and exclusive tangible products.

Each of the five digital assets were inspired by the style of their Spring/Summer ’23 lines and unlock further opportunities for collectors to participate in this year’s NYFW. The NFTs also contain additional value beyond the mere keepsake artwork.

ALTU’s NFTs include the choice between a limited-edition tote bag, oversized tee, or annual membership to New York’s premiere art museums.

The NFT from AnOnlyChild unlocks a rare belt bag or tickets to their NYFW afterparty celebration as well as Kim’s which provides entry to her runway show or a high-quality hoodie.

Offering even more scarce collectibles, Simkhai’s NFTs reveal a signed and numbered runway print, and the Blonds’ key comes with a signed copy of their book.

Concentrating on Web3’s boundless opportunities, Afterpay has also released its own free-of-cost NFT which included access to its NYFW close-friends Instagram, an invitation to RSVP to NYFW: The Talks sessions, and a six-month trial to TIDAL’s music streaming.

Furthermore, the entire NFT sale is being utilized to raise profits in support of Free Arts NYC – which gives funding and resources to underprivileged art communities in New York.

As many of the luxury brands attending NYFW have already begun marketing their own NFTs and special utilities, most of the designer’s collections come with high barriers and costs to join.

Afterpay is reducing its project’s entrance by allowing the NFTs to be purchased with fiat money and of course, the option to buy now and pay later through Afterpay’s platform.

The NFTs will be exclusively held on the Polygon network and available for purchase from now until September 9.
