New AI App From Founders of Instagram Aims Revolutionize News Generation

Through personalized news aggregation, with future plans for social networking integrations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to rapidly evolve and is transforming an increasing number of industries, with the news soon to join the list.

A new news aggregation app titled Artifact is looking to be among the first to utilize AI to reshape the way news is sourced, generated, and consumed. Developed by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom, and Mike Krieger, as well as the former lead of consumer products at Instagram, Robby Stein.

The name itself was designed to evoke the project’s three tenants: “articles, facts, and artificial intelligence,” according to a report from engadget, which compared the new AI offering to an aggregation app driven by a “TikTok-like recommendation algorithm.”

Artifact’s goal is to provide users with personalized news stories based on their reading preferences. The central feed of the app is populated with stories from popular publications like The New York Times and as users read more articles, the app will begin to personalize the feed to their preferences.

The recommendation system is built to prioritize the amount of time users spend reading about certain subjects over clicks and comments, which are popular metrics for algorithms on social platforms.

In addition to its recommendation algorithm, Artifact also plans to feature a social component in the future. The app will include a feed that highlights articles from users you follow and will also allow private discussion through a direct-message inbox. Systrom and Krieger are reported to be funding the project with their own money and see it as a first attempt to imagine what the next generation of social apps could look like.

The use of AI in news generation has the potential to revolutionize the way people consume news — this is because AI can analyze vast amounts of data that wouldn’t be humanly possible, also providing a uniquely tailored personal experience. From a commercial standpoint, the tech can also help news organizations to identify trends and sources, as well as produce stories more efficiently.

As the tech advances, AI has the potential to transform the news industry by making it more efficient, personalized and trustworthy — which will in turn reshape the experience for consumers. Artifact is just one example of how AI can be used to create a new generation of news apps that provide users with extremely personalized news feeds.
