MissJourney's AI Alternative Breaks the Gender Bias Barrier

Launched on International Women’s Day to raise awareness of gender bias, an AI alternative that celebrates women.

In a world where AI is becoming an integral part of our daily lives, it’s crucial to ensure that the technology we use reflects the diversity and inclusivity of our society. However, in a statement by TEDXAmsterdam Women and ACE, recent studies have shown that AI image generators are not immune to bias,” with less than 20% of the images created representing women in certain professions or character descriptions.”

To address this issue, TEDxAmsterdam Women and ACE have launched MissJourney, an AI alternative that creates artwork exclusively featuring women. This initiative aims to actively counter biased image generators and create more inclusive digital realities. By showcasing a wave of female AI imagery, MissJourney hopes to inspire a more equitable future where women are represented equally in all aspects of society.

MissJourney’s launch coincides with the start of TEDxAmsterdam Women’s year-long theme, “Decoding the Future.” This theme is about disrupting societal norms and codes that have perpetuating inequality for too long. By breaking down these barriers and building a more equitable future, we can create a fair world for everyone.

“This is why we created MissJourney, an AI alternative that creates artwork of exclusively women. With the aim of actively countering current biased image generators and ensuring we build inclusive digital realities – right from the start. We need your help to create a wave of female AI imagery, and show the world what the future could look like.” The company shared in a statement.

TEDxAmsterdam Women’s mission is to empower and impact women in society and the workplace, aiming to increase equality in all aspects of life. ACE, a modern agency group, constantly works on integrated offerings for brands that want to remain relevant in a rapidly changing and rejuvenating world. Merging the two together to launch the AI initiative on International Women’s Day to further amplify their message.

In a report published by BCG, titled ”Web3 Already Has a Gender Diversity Problem,”using data from Crunchbase consisting of nearly 2,800 participants worldwide, results showed that only 13% of Web3 startups include a female founder. Within that group, 10% of founding teams include both men and women, and only 3% of companies have a team that is exclusively female. The study also notes that in funding for Web3 companies, the split is even wider. All-male founding teams raise nearly four times as much, on average, as all-female teams—almost $30 million compared to about $8 million. And among Web3 companies that have raised more than $100 million, the percentage with all-female founding teams is zero.

Gender imbalance in the Web3 ecosystem could significantly affect how the space itself develops wether through business, interactions and how humans are represented online. The default avatar options in the metaverse are often male, white, and cisgender, reflecting the lack of diversity among designers and mindsets within most web3 companies.

This underrepresentation and AI bias could lead to a more significant impact if not addressed or altered sooner than later. The launch of MissJourney is a call to action for all of us to challenge bias and embrace equity.

Decentralization, equality, and a borderless world are central to the ethos of web3, the next generation of the internet. That can only be accomplished by ensuring that the very foundation in emerging technology also reflects that.

“Current developments are happening so fast, and we now have the opportunity to fundamentally develop future technology to be inclusive,” said Amber Haank, Strategy Director at ACE. “Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of our daily lives; it’s a whole new world we are collectively building. So why not get it right first time and say goodbye to old-fashioned stereotypes? If we build an inclusive digital reality right from the start, we won’t have to correct it later.”
