My Body, My Business: Unicorn DAO's Newest Auction Celebrates Women Artists

Featuring a one week auction that will showcase physical and digital artworks by Marina Abramović, Glam Beckett, Jenny Holzer, Cindy Sherman, Ellen Von Unwerth, Katie Bush, Fawn Rogers, Annie Sprinkle, Zhanna Kadyrova, Pussy Riot, and more.

Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, Sotheby’s and UnicornDAO are pushing out “MY BODY, MY BUSINESS” auction to celebrate women artists, as well as supporting sexual and reproductive health and rights organizations, including Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Curated by UnicornDAO co-founder and Pussy Riot creator, Nadya Tolokonnikova, the benefit auction opens for bidding on March 7, which will consist of physical and digital artworks by Marina Abramović, Glam Beckett, Jenny Holzer, Cindy Sherman, Ellen Von Unwerth, Katie Bush, Fawn Rogers, Annie Sprinkle, Zhanna Kadyrova, Pussy Riot, and more.

You can view the full list of Sotheby’s group artists here.

UnicornDAO is a powerful feminist collective that launched in March 2022 by Tolokonnikova, that redistributes wealth and visibility in order to help create equality for women-identified and LGBTQ+ people in the world, as well as in the digital art space.

Two months after its launch, UnicornDAO announced its $4.5 million USD raise led by ConsenSys Mesh, Yuga Labs, MoonPay, World of Women (WoW), Tribute Labs, Quantum, Flamingo DAO, The LAO, Wave Digital Assets (fka Wave Financial), Collab Currency, Polygon, Big Sky Partners, and Beeple.

Proceeds from this week’s Sotheby’s auction will support a number of organizations that champion sexual and reproductive health care, education, and rights.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), who joins blockchain-based 501(c)(3) public charity and community foundation, Endaoment, is also launching PPFA.eth — its first-ever crypto wallet that will enable donors to direct their crypto donations to support the ongoing battle that has unfortunately shaken both the legal and political landscapes when it comes to providing the necessary access to care and resources women need to make informed decisions about their bodies, their lives, and their futures.

“In these unprecedented times, it’s essential for people to band together in support of sexual and reproductive health and rights — including abortion access. Planned Parenthood is encouraged by the support we’ve seen and received from leaders within the tech space, from traditional and digitally-native women artists, and from supporters across all industries and demographics nationwide,” says Dawn Laguens, chief of global strategy and innovation at PPFA.

Swedish-American artist Michele Pred also says that “we are in a state of emergency for bodily autonomy in this country. It is urgent that everybody gets involved in reproductive justice by voting, donating their time (or money), and marching on the streets!”

“My pussy, my riot. I spent two years in jail fighting for feminism in Russia, and it hurts me to see reproductive rights being taken away in the US,” says Tolokonnikova, who has spoken before U.S. Congress, British Parliament, European Parliament, and even appeared on Season 3 of Netflix’s House of Cards.

Glam Beckett, the artist and founder of Sad Girls Bar, shared her enthusiasm with Hypemoon:

“Nadya is a true inspiration to me, and what she does with UnicornDAO to support, showcase, and highlight women artists is so empowering. To be auctioning off my art alongside so many legendary and talented artists at the most famous and prestigious marketplace is just a dream come true,” she said.

As a global feminist protest art movement, Pussy Riot has expanded to include hundreds of people who identify as part of its community.

Tolokonnikova, who was sentenced in 2012 to 2 years imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance. From undergoing a hunger strike protesting savage prison conditions and ended up being sent far away to a Siberian penal colony, she managed to maintain her artistic activity along with her prison punk band.

She recently signed with Web3 management company, Metacurio, and is under the wings of co-founders Jeff Hood and STX Entertainment’s Sophie Watts.

Metacurio is best known for having helped integrate Mike Tyson, Dennis Rodman, Odell Beckham, Jr., Wesley Snipes, and others into Web3. It also manages the likes of Beyond Media’s Nicole Behnam, KMoney, Whisbe, and recently, CoinDesk’s Casey Craig.

The MY BODY, MY BUSINESS auction will close on March 14.
