Vitalik Buterin's 2018 Whitepaper Is Re-Introduced In Upcoming On-Chain OE Record Collection
The Quadratic Funding Collection is reissuing “Liberal Radicalism,” the 2018 co-authored whitepaper by Vitalik Buterin as part of a new open edition collection launch by Metalabel.
On Wednesday, Metalabel, an operating system for groups of creators to release work, collaborate, and support one another, introduced Quality Drops, an on-chain, collectible record that consists of bundles of create work — from digital and physical creative work to art, tickets, experiences, and music.
Metalabel envisions a cultural economy where creative workers and artists don’t compete against each other and the algorithm for likes and attention, but instead monetize and release their work collectively.
It was founded by GXRLSCHOOL founder and TED music and performance curator Anna Bulbrook, product engineer Lauren Dorman, Etsy founder Rob Kalin, Ampled and Unnamed Fund co-founder Austin Robey, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler, software architect Brandon Valosek, and product designer Ilya Yudanov,
Quality Drops will be launched in collaboration with Gitcoin Presents: The Quadratic Funding Collection, an open- and limited-edition onchain record collecting work by Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin, Harvard economist Zoë Hitzig, and RadicalxChange founder E. Glen Weyl, as well as Gitcoin co-founders Kevin Owocki and Scott Moore.
The Quadratic Funding Collection reissues “Liberal Radicalism,” the 2018 whitepaper by Buterin, Hitzig, and Weyl. The paper introduced Quadratic Funding to the world by proposing a radical idea and mathematical foundation for directing resources towards projects in a way that benefits the greatest number of people rather than those with the greatest influence.
To date, over $70 million USD in funding has been directed by Quadratic Funding towards public goods and open-source projects by Gitcoin and other organizations.
“Records allow the public to show their appreciation for great ideas regardless of when they were conceived or how they were originally distributed,” says Metalabel Director Yancey Strickler. “We think of The Quadratic Funding Collection as a retroactive grant. ‘Liberal Radicalism’ was published for the public good, its authors not seeking recognition or compensation, and we want to celebrate that. In collaboration with Gitcoin, we’re excited to explore the ways this new record format can monetize and catalog important projects, and thrilled to elevate such a special piece of internet history.”
Each record in The Quadratic Funding Collection contains a digital copy of the 2018 whitepaper, which is signed by the three authors in addition to two essays by Owocki and Moore, celebrating the impact of Quadratic Funding.
Each Quality Drops release will be an onchain, collectible record. Records will consist of bundles of creative work, from digital creative work to physical creative work to art, tickets, experiences, music, and more. All Quality Drops are part of a bigger picture of work or cultural movements and offer access to all varieties of cultural media, such as anthologies and co-authored writings, experiential art installations, card decks, collections of prompts and thought exercises, collaborative research projects, and sustainable fashion.
Funds raised from the records will go toward the Gitcoin Matching Grant Pool and the Plurality Institute, both of which fund and support public goods projects in Web3, climate solutions, crypto regulation advocacy, diversity, equity and inclusion, and decentralized science.
The collection will be available for purchase from March 1 to 8.
